Voice of Nature (VoNat) recently engaged local communities through CBS Radio to raise awareness about the amphibians of the Mount Cameroon Area and the growing threats facing these important yet increasingly vulnerable species.

The radio sensitization provided an opportunity for VoNat to share key findings from its recent pilot amphibian reconnaissance survey conducted across selected wetlands on the southeastern flank of Mount Cameroon. The survey generated valuable information on amphibian presence and the condition of wetland habitats that support these species.

During the engagement, VoNat highlighted the ecological importance of amphibians and their close dependence on healthy wetlands, streams, forests and other freshwater habitats. The discussion also drew attention to pressures that can affect amphibian populations and their habitats, reinforcing the need for greater community awareness and participation in conservation.

The initiative forms part of VoNat’s broader efforts to strengthen amphibian conservation in the Mount Cameroon Area, a landscape of high biodiversity importance. By taking conservation messages to communities through local media, VoNat is seeking to make scientific findings more accessible and encourage greater local involvement in protecting biodiversity.

The radio programme also created a platform for dialogue around the role communities can play in observing changes in wetlands, identifying threats and supporting efforts to safeguard important amphibian habitats.

VoNat encouraged community members, local authorities and other stakeholders to work together to protect wetlands and freshwater ecosystems while promoting responsible land-use practices around sensitive habitats.

Through continued research, public awareness and community engagement, VoNat aims to strengthen understanding of amphibians and build broader support for their conservation across the Mount Cameroon landscape.
