Voice of Nature (VoNat) has donated trash cans to fight against littering and to contribute to sustainable waste management in the Buea Municipality, South West Region of Cameroon.

The trash cans were donated, February 18, 2023, on the heels of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope and beyond. This was in consonance with the Upcycling & Waste Management Programme of the Organization, which aims to transform waste into other useful products and contributing to sustainable waste management in Cameroon.

Street littering is a lifestyle in Buea and most cities of Cameroon with litters including but not limited to pastic bag, plastic bottles, construction waste, alcoholic beverages and fast food packaging, and plastic bottles. Trash cans where denizens could drop wastes for proper disposal are absent in most part of the Buea Municipality. “It is scarce to see trash cans like this on the streets of Buea. I wish many of such could be placed within short distances. On several occasions, I have dumbed plastic bottles on the streets because I didn’t see a trash can to drop it. Sometimes, I keep it and drop where I see a hip of refuse,” said Efuet Anna a Bonduma Community Member.

Buea denizens welcomed the trash cans donated by VoNat with great joy, and began putting it into use immediately after donation. Littering facilitates the spread of diseases and bacteria, causes environmental pollutions and contributes to inducing floods. While the population of Buea is expected to make good use of the trash cans for a litter-free Buea, the waste management body of the town, Hygiene and Sanitation Cameroon (HYSACAM) is expected to assist in monitoring and ensuring the timely disposal of trash from bin to avoid the overflow and pilling up of garbage.
