After gaining understanding about climate change and climate justice following a climate justice programme, which Voice of Nature (VoNat) is carrying out with the support of CDKN and Mcginnity Family Foundation, kids and young adults in Buea have refused to be passive victims of the crisis. The youngsters have since April 2024 being calling for greater actions/response to climate change and climate justice using different media including radio programmes.
In one of the special climate change radio programmes, some kids and young adults from five communities within the Buea municipality, also students of Praise Academy, educated their communities on local actions they can take to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. In the over 30 minutes radio programme on the Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) Buea, the youngsters used songs, poems, articles and open letters to raise their voices against some injustices identified in the climate change crisis, making some palpable recommendations to the mayor and other local leaders, the government, companies, industrialized countries and their local communities.
While calling for greater climate actions and climate justice, the future leaders planted close to 100 trees in schools, hospitals and other public spaces to fight against climate change and its impacts. Plans are underway to engage the children in the protection and sustainable management of the trees planted and climate smart vegetable gardening.
