Voice of Nature (VoNat)’s recent pilot amphibian monitoring survey in the Mount Cameroon Landscape has been brought to life in a newly released documentary by Impact with Batata, offering audiences an inside look at one of the organization’s latest conservation initiatives aimed at establishing a long-term conservation plan for Mount Cameroon’s amphibian species. The documentary follows VoNat’s amphibian monitoring training and subsequent pilot field surveys, showcasing the knowledge, dedication, and teamwork of conservation practitioners and young researchers as they explored wetland habitats within the Mount Cameroon Landscape. Participants received practical training in amphibian identification, monitoring protocols, habitat assessment, and field data collection before embarking on night-time surveys to document amphibian species and their habitats.
The Mount Cameroon Landscape is internationally recognized as one of Africa’s richest centres of biodiversity, supporting numerous endemic and threatened fauna and flora found nowhere else on Earth. Yet these species continue to face mounting threats from habitat degradation, climate change, pollution, and other human-induced pressures, underscoring the urgent need for regular monitoring and evidence-based conservation action.
Beyond documenting field activities, the film highlights the critical role of capacity building in strengthening amphibian conservation. By equipping local conservationists with the skills and tools needed to monitor amphibian populations, VoNat is helping establish the foundation for long-term biodiversity monitoring while fostering a new generation of conservation leaders.
The documentary also captures the determination of field teams as they navigated challenging terrain, conducted nocturnal surveys, and recorded valuable ecological observations that will contribute to future conservation planning in the Mount Cameroon Landscape.
