Across the slopes of Mount Cameroon, communities are increasingly feeling the effects of climate change. Buea, once known for its cool and refreshing climate, is experiencing rising temperatures driven by deforestation, land degradation, and rapid urbanization. As green spaces continue to shrink, the impacts are becoming more visible: hotter days, reduced shade, soil degradation, and growing pressure on local ecosystems and livelihoods.

In response to these challenges, Voice of Nature (VoNat) is taking action through community-driven ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation initiatives that aim to create a greener, healthier, and more resilient future for the people of Buea and surrounding communities. At VoNat’s tree nursery in Upper Bokova, Buea, South West Cameroon, thousands of indigenous tree seedlings are being carefully nurtured and maintained by the VoNat team. The nursery serves as a hub for restoration efforts, producing native tree species that are well-adapted to the local environment and capable of restoring degraded landscapes while supporting biodiversity conservation.
Every seedling receives daily care to ensure healthy growth and survival. From potting and watering to shading and monitoring, the process reflects VoNat’s commitment to long-term ecosystem recovery and sustainable climate solutions. In the coming weeks, the seedlings will be planted in public spaces, schools, and degraded community lands, while others will be distributed to households to encourage community participation in greening efforts. These trees will help provide shade, reduce heat, improve air quality, restore soil fertility, protect water sources, and create healthier living environments for communities increasingly vulnerable to climate impacts.

According to VoNat’s Ecosystem Restoration Program Assistant, Ms Munyar Delphine Sunday, the initiative goes beyond planting trees. โEvery indigenous tree we raise is an investment in the future of our communities and ecosystems. Through restoration and community participation, we are helping to cool our environment, protect biodiversity, and create healthier and more resilient communities around Mount Cameroon,โ Ms Munyar disclosed.
VoNat believes that ecosystem restoration is a shared responsibility that requires collective action from communities, institutions, and individuals alike. By promoting indigenous tree planting and environmental stewardship, the organization continues to empower local communities to become active actors in climate action and biodiversity conservation.

As climate challenges continue to intensify, initiatives like these demonstrate that local action can create lasting environmental impact. Together, through restoration, conservation, and sustainable practices, we can build a greener, cooler, and safer planet where wildlife and people can thrive together.
