The adverse effect of climate change in the form of increase temperature and disasters like floods, landslides are felt today than ever before. This beside other environmental challenges in Bamenda motivated some kids and youths, who have under the guidance and mentorship of Voice of Nature (VoNat), Meg Wah and the North West Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED-NW), been engaged in planting trees in public spaces and environmental protection radio sensitization campaigns.
The tree planting and sensitization campaign is one of the five micro-projects co-designed and co-implemented with kids and youths in Bamenda within the framework of the EcoKids project implemented with funding from Earth Rising Foundation. This micro project aims to fight against climate change and air pollution in the town of Bamenda. The Acha Eye Hospital Bamenda, Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) North West and CBS Radio Bamenda are some of the public areas in Bamenda that benefited from this tree planting exercise.
The tree planting exercise was greatly appreciated by community leaders. “We are very grateful to you for choosing our environment to carry out such a laudable activity. These children will grow knowing the various procedures involved in tree planting and the importance of trees in our environment. I am available and willing to support these children in this environmental protection initiative,” Mr. Tembe Charles Tembe, Station Manager of CRTV Bamenda said.
Besides the tree planting in public spaces, the youngsters organized micro-radio programmes on CBS Radio Bamenda and the Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) North West during which they raised their voices for climate justice and also sensitized the Bamenda population about environmental protection.
