Planting trees is very crucial in this era of climate change and land degradation but ensuring the survival of planted trees is even more paramount.  Cameroon-based biodiversity conservation and sustainable development non-profit organization, Voice of Nature (VoNat), is engaged in a monitoring and protection programme to enhance the survival rate of trees  planted mitigate climate change and its impacts as well as restore the depleted urban landscape of Buea in South West Cameroon.

“We conducted a monitoring and evaluation of the trees we planted a few months ago and noticed that strayed animals had destroyed many of them. This is why we decided to protect the trees. We are using local material to fence round the tree. We are committed to creating a greener, healthier, and more sustainable urban environment,” VoNat’s Climate Action Programme Coordinator, Dr. Dongang Cerephine said.

Tree survival rates are crucial for maintaining healthy urban landscapes and mitigating climate change. Effective monitoring and protection strategies are, therefore, essential to ensure the long-term health and survival of trees.

The tree monitoring and protection action, was carried out as part of VoNat’s climate justice initiative funded by Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN).
