Farmers from the Bwitingi, Bwiteva, and Bokova communities in the Mount Cameroon area have received organic liquid fertilizer and hands-on training to enhance sustainable agriculture and promote the conservation of endangered species within Mount Cameroon National Park. The distribution event, held at the Bwitingi Community Hall, marked the latest milestone in an ongoing initiative led by Voice of Nature (VoNat) in partnership with the Regenerative Agriculture Hub of Nkwa4Change Solutions. It follows earlier trainings that introduced smallholder farmers to ago-forestry, regenerative agriculture, and organic fertilizer production using locally available materials.

Alongside fertilizer distribution, the farmers received refresher lessons on proper application techniques to maximize effectiveness and reduce environmental harm. “I cannot wait to start using mine on my farms! My neighbor, Mami Monica, uses this organic liquid fertilizer, and sells her vegetables at a higher price because people know they won’t face health issues after eating them,” said Kima Quinta, a farmer from Bokova.

Another participant, Ndezita Margeno from Bwitingi, noted the potential ripple effect beyond the Mount Cameroon region: “My relatives in Ndu suffer from fertilizer challenges. Now that I’ve learned how to produce it and use it properly, I will teach them too so they can improve their crop yields.”

The project is part of VoNat’s Mount Cameroon Endangered Species Conservation Initiative, supported by the New England Biolabs Foundation. It seeks to improve soil fertility and food security through Eco-friendly farming methods while discouraging unsustainable agricultural practices that threaten the park’s biodiversity. “We are excited by the enthusiasm shown by the farmers. It gives us hope for the positive impact these efforts can yield,” said Ndimuh B. Shancho, Executive Director of VoNat.

To ensure long-term success, VoNat and Nkwa4Change Solutions have set up a monitoring and mentorship system. A WhatsApp group has been created to allow farmers to share experiences, seek guidance, and report challenges. “We will continue following up with the farmers to ensure correct application of the fertilizer. The WhatsApp group offers them real-time support,” added Motia Felicia, Co-founder of Nkwa4Change Solutions. The next training session is scheduled to take place in Bonakanda, targeting at least 50 farmers from Bova, Buea Town, and Bonakanda.
